Hallam Senior Secondary College Sports Academy:
Certificate II Community Recreation

Course Aims:
The Sporting Academy program of excellence through sport provides students the opportunity to acquire and develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to work in the areas of community and recreation pursuits. Leadership, organisational and specialist activity skills will be developed through theory and practical sessions.
Course Details:
All students will complete a common Year 11 program with elective units of competency according to the selected stream. The program has a focus on the following streams:
AFL, General, Basketball, Rugby League, Soccer

The VET Community Recreation Unit 1–2 core units of competence include first aid, occupational health and safety policies and procedures and knowledge of the sport and recreation industry. Elective units can focus on career orientated activities, coaching specialisations and/or officiating specialisations in areas such as AFL, Rugby League, Basketball and Soccer. The General program offers specialisations in sports first aid, sports training, administration and many other sports related fields.

The VCE VET Unit 3–4 sequence core units of competence include sport and recreation law, risk analysis activities and conducting a sport and recreation session for participants. Optional focus areas may be available in aquatics, fitness, or sport.

Attendance: Nominal hours must be achieved in the classes plus attendance at all Wednesday afternoon training sessions
Course Duration: Certificate II is gained after Year 1 (Units 1 & 2), Year 2 (Units 3 & 4) with Units of Competency from Certificate III Program - scored assessment for ENTER
Workplacement: involved in delivering sports programs and clinics at the local Primary Schools and with sporting organisations

Future Pathways:
The Certificate II in Community Recreation can provide pathways into the community and sport and recreation industries. Occupations include assisting with the conduct of recreation activities, events and promotions, facility maintenance, operations, sports medicine and other associated tasks. Facilities include leisure centres, aquatic centres, amusement parks, adventure and theme parks.
